Two heavyweight champions in their sport — Breeders Cup winners Accelerate and City of Light — are set to square off in the third running of the Pegasus World Cup Saturday at Gulfstream Park. The last races for both were dominating, so it is only fitting that the only horse to beat Accelerate in the last year, City of Light, gets one more shot before they both retire.
Accelerate was just named Top Older Horse at the Eclipse Awards, capping his 2018 campaign with a win in the Breeders Cup Classic. City of Light dominated the competition in the Breeders Cup Mile, winning gate to wire in impressive fashion. Now, they both will end their careers with on final swan song.
City of Light beat Accelerate earlier in the year in the Oaklawn Handicap, but that race was run at a shorter distance. The Pegasus World Cup is run at the classic distance of a mile and a quarter where, this season, Accelerate has had no equals. Accelerate is 9-5 morning line while City of Light hits the tote board at 5/2.
Both horses are headed to the breeding shed after the race. City of Light, a son of Quality Road, will join Accelerate at Lanes End Farm. Both are expected to have full books in year one.
